The business case for the Sydney to Newcastle High Speed Rail project has been released, identifying opportunities for the project to support 160,000 new homes, 99,000 new jobs, and to deliver a $250 billion economic boost over 50 years.
The corridor has important long-term implications for land use planning in NSW, particularly for the Central Coast, Newcastle, and broader Hunter regions, where it will support rapidly growing populations, enhance liveability and connectivity, and catalyse job creation. The Newcastle station, proposed for Broadmeadow, would accelerate the delivery of the Broadmeadow Place Strategy, which Patch supported the delivery of, and unlock potential for additional dwellings and jobs in this catchment.
The Federal Government’s additional $229M funding to progress the corridor marks an important step toward detailed design, statutory approvals and corridor protection. While construction remains years away, the next phase will focus on refining scope, cost and approvals to ensure the project is “shovel ready” including:
• Corridor protection and safeguarding future infrastructure
• Precinct planning around potential station locations
• Housing supply sequencing and density uplift
• Infrastructure alignment and service capacity
• Environmental assessment and stakeholder engagement
Patch Planning commends the work done to date by the High Speed Rail Authority and supporting agencies. We look forward to continuing to monitor key infrastructure initiatives shaping planning outcomes across NSW.
